IRS Stops at Sacramento Car Wash to Collect 4 Cents

Darren and I discuss the news a lot, it's part of our job. One of the things I frequently find myself saying to him is "that's it, we can't get any more insane," and then something else comes along to prove me wrong. I guess that keeps the job interesting but it also is deeply concerning. Where has common sense gone? Why can't our government and related agencies make decisions which make even just a little bit of sense?
I wouldn't believe this story if it wasn't published all over the place from a collection of different news sources. Apparently, a couple of IRS agents took the time to get into the car and drive to a Sacramento car wash (isn't that upping their carbon footprint?) to collect 4 cents. Yes, 4 pennies. Yes, I know it's hard to believe. If the car consumed one gallon of gas, which would be a short trip, that's 75 times the cost of what the IRS agents were hoping to collect.
To be fair, this apparently is from the 2006 tax year so with interest and penalties the amount equals $202.35. We won't even talk about the fact that the store owner has documentation from the IRS in 2009 saying that the company has paid all taxes. Even at $202.35, by the time you spend the gas and the manpower to try and collect the money you're taking a loss. Employee time isn't cheap. Why in the hell were these IRS agents wasting their time and our money?
This type of government waste makes me insane. I recently received a letter in the mail from the government telling me to expect my Census paperwork. A couple of days later the Census paperwork showed up. Was that first letter, which probably cost millions of dollars to send to everyone, really needed? How stupid do they think we are? Next time, put the informational letter in the same envelope as a cover letter and save us all some money. STOP IT!
This government is out of control and nothing proves that point more clearly than when the IRS wastes the time of two government agents to go out and collect on a 4 cent tax debt that doesn't even exist. We have completely and utterly lost our minds.
